Ford A Series Camper

This Ford A 60210 1982 Model was originally built as a Police Underwater Search Team Bus.

It has an aluminium and fibreglass box body and integral roof ladder to roof rack. Bought unseen from Ebay by it's owner it came to us firstly for an overhaul, then a gradual camper & LPG conversion.

First problems were a leaking master cylinder and a rotten exhaust. The exhaust system (no longer available) was repaired and rebuilt using a Mk3 Transit silencer. Tyres had mostly perished (I suspect they were it's original boots) and with 700 x R16 not in great abundance, were replaced with 7.50 X R16 (Common Landrover fitment) LASSA's which combine reasonable road manners with good cross country abilities (handy for festival sites).

The Ford Essex 3 litre V6 was suffering from poor ignition and stuttering under load. The plugs, leads, condensor, rotor and cap were replaced. The carb stripped and found to be full of silt. Also fitted to this model is a 'Hoof Governor' which I have not seen before. This seems to act as an extra butterfly valve below the carburettor operated by crankcase pressure. As we want as little restriction as possible, the butterfly was removed.

The front bumper would originally have been fitted with a winch, but makes a useful step up for engine access.

Still to do are some welding repairs to bodywork (front edges of bonnet have suffered) and fitting of woodburner and associated campervan extras. Watch this space for updates.
